TOKYO IN BLACK

Thanks for visiting my website.

"Tokyo in black" was shot as a street photography project from November 2006 and May 2008. It only conveys my own impressions and visions about people and things I've seen in Tokyo, therefore it doesn't represent anything real or objective.

Tokyo is a patchwork of various badly matched styles spreading over a seemingly infinite number of small, nameless streets. Apart from the business district with its prevailing skyscrapers, the Japanese capital mostly consists of two or three storey buildings, by which one could confuse this megalopolis with a juxtaposition of villages thrown together, with a labyrinth of back streets populated by pedestrians and cyclists. The street photographer can explore the immensity of Tokyo through its different flavors: from the working-class Ueno to chic Ginza, or from the hysterical Shibuya to the calm and peaceful Meguro. This is the way to observe the infinite range of paradoxes in Japanese society: chic and kitsch, innocence and perversion, conformity and eccentricity, order and chaos…The extreme contrasts of an enigmatic and yet familiar society with both of those qualities being revealed at the same time.

I'm a freelance photographer specializing in Asia, currently living in Paris, France.
